Experts in Licensing and Joint Development

Spoke Sciences develops delivery technologies for difficult to formulate compounds. Our portfolio includes approaches for consumer beverages, solid oral dosage forms, topical and mucosal products. We have also developed finished products utilizing these various technologies. We invite inquiries from potential licensing partners who seek ready to sell finished products or better ingredient technologies that are easy to implement, improve customer satisfaction, and offer exclusivity through robust patent protection.

Additionally, our development group works with licensing partners to create unique finished products to meet customer needs and product opportunities.

Patented Technologies

IsoCaps

Spoke’s IsoCaps technology platform is a proprietary method of incorporating lipophilic substances into water dispersible nanoparticles.  IsoCaps is a versatile platform capable of accommodating a wide variety of actives including formulations that feature all-natural, plant-derived ingredients. IsoCaps permit very high concentrations of difficult to formulate ingredients to be easily added to any beverage or water-based topical product.

The IsoCaps approach tailors the active ingredient of choice with a specific encapsulating matrix that optimizes the active’s solubility and stability. For example, 1 ml of IsoCaps VIT100 contains 100% of the RDA for vitamins A, D, E and K. IsoCaps can be added with simple low energy mixing, are stable and virtually tasteless.

Spoke Sciences has a growing pipeline of ready-to-use IsoCaps tailored for functional foods and topicals.  Additionally, our development group can work with licensing partners to create unique IsoCaps products to meet customer needs.

SNAC: Salcaprozate Sodium

Salcaprozate sodium or “SNAC” is a patented, absorption enhancing excipient that drastically improves the oral bioavailability of lipophilic active ingredients.  SNAC is already used in two marketed products – an over-the-counter medical food that improves the bioavailability of vitamin B12, and a blockbuster diabetes drug with the active ingredient semaglutide.  SNAC is covered by a global patent estate with issued patents in the US, Europe, Australia, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Korea and Israel.

Challenging lipophilic (non-water soluble) active ingredients can be combined with SNAC to make proprietary oral dosage forms with long patent life.  SNAC can also be used for life cycle management making oral dosage forms out of known actives currently administered by injection.  In short SNAC is ready for development with poorly absorbed nutritional supplements.

Spoke also owns an extensive dossier on SNAC including methods of manufacture, product feasibility analyses, and pre-clinical and clinical studies.  Among these are a human clinical study showing that SNAC increases cannabidiol (CBD) oral bioavailability by 6-fold compared to standard solid-filled capsules without SNAC, and another clinical study showing that SNAC increased oral tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) exposure by 2.3-fold compared to THC in ethanol. A summary of the THC data is available here.

Spoke has also developed data validating SNAC’s mechanism of action which will support continued growth of Spoke’s SNAC patent portfolio.

Wafertech

Wafertech is Spoke Sciences’ patent-pending system for incorporating lipophilic ingredients into prepared beverages like coffee or tea.  The Wafertech innovation infuses lipophilic active ingredients into any “porous substrate” such as a coffee filter or tea bag.  One innovative product example is a filter designed to fit a standard espresso machine in cafés.  The infused filter is placed inside the brewing “portafilter” underneath ground espresso, and the active ingredient is infused into the espresso drink with >80% extraction efficiency.  Wafertech is simple to use, eliminates machine fouling and ensures zero carryover from cup to cup.  The technology can also be readily applied to K-cup and other pod-based brewing systems.

Fluid Crystal Matrix (FCM)™

FCM particle technology is designed to maximize solubilization of insoluble botanical compounds.  Originally developed for pharma, the membrane-like structure of our fluid matrix makes it ideal for applications to mucous membranes and skin.
